How to avoid crowds at Big Island attractions

Tips for visiting popular spots at the best times

The Big Island of Hawai‘i is home to some of the most breathtaking natural wonders, from cascading waterfalls to volcanic landscapes and pristine beaches. However, these iconic destinations can also draw large crowds, especially during peak travel seasons.

Why timing matters when exploring the Big Island

If you want to experience the island’s beauty without the hustle and bustle, a little planning can go a long way. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the Big Island’s top attractions at the best times while respecting the local environment and culture.

By planning your visits during off-peak hours, you’ll not only avoid congestion but also increase your chances of spotting wildlife, capturing stunning photos, and enjoying a more relaxed experience.

The best way to truly appreciate Hawai‘i’s stunning landscapes is to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon when nature, not the crowds, takes center stage.

Best times to visit popular Big Island attractions

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park

Best time: Early morning (before 9 AM) or after sunset for lava viewing

Why: The park is busiest between 10 AM and 3 PM. Arriving early allows for quieter hikes, cooler temperatures, and better opportunities to see native birds. If you’re interested in seeing lava flows, nighttime visits offer the most dramatic views.

Akaka Falls State Park

Best time: Before 10 AM or late afternoon

Why: The midday rush can make the short hike to the falls feel crowded. Arriving early means better lighting for photos and a more serene atmosphere.

Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon

Why: This stunning black sand beach is a popular spot for visitors hoping to see Hawaiian green sea turtles. The turtles often bask on the shore in the morning, and late afternoon visits offer cooler temperatures with fewer tourists.

Mauna Kea Summit & Visitor Information Station

Best time: Just before sunset or early morning for stargazing

Why: The summit provides one of the best stargazing experiences in the world. Arriving before sunset lets you see breathtaking views, while nighttime visits allow for incredible celestial displays with fewer people.

Hapuna Beach State Park

Best time: Before 10 AM or after 3 PM

Why: One of the island’s most famous white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach can get crowded by midday. Arriving early ensures calm waters for swimming, while late afternoon offers cooler temperatures and beautiful sunset views.

Additional tips to avoid crowds

  • Visit on weekdays — Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest days for most attractions. If possible, explore on weekdays for a quieter experience.

  • Plan hikes for sunrise or sunset — Popular hiking trails, such as the Pololū Valley Lookout or Kīlauea Iki Trail, are less crowded in the early morning or just before sunset.

  • Opt for lesser-known beaches — While Hapuna Beach is famous, nearby beaches like Waialea Bay (Beach 69) or Makalawena Beach offer just as much beauty with fewer visitors.

  • Book tours in advance — If you plan to take a guided tour (such as snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay), early reservations can help secure less crowded time slots.

We took an early-morning tour and arrived when there were just 3 other boats. By the time we departed at 10:30 a.m., there were more than 30 boats swarming around the bay!

Experience the Big Island at your own pace

Exploring the Big Island’s natural wonders without the crowds makes for a more relaxing and immersive adventure. Whether you’re catching the sunrise at a secluded beach or stargazing atop Mauna Kea, timing your visits strategically allows you to experience Hawai‘i’s beauty at its finest.
