Big Island Travel Tips for First-Timers
The Big Island of Hawai‘i is a vast and diverse paradise, offering everything from active volcanoes to lush rainforests and stunning beaches. For first-time visitors, understanding the island’s geography, renting a car, and planning your activities wisely can make all the difference. Here’s what you need to know to have the best experience on your Big Island adventure.
Understanding Big Island’s Geography
Unlike smaller Hawaiian islands, the Big Island is truly big. Driving from one side to the other and back can take several hours, so plan accordingly. You can circumnavigate the island, with plenty of stops for beaches and attractions, in a full day.
West Side (Kona & Kohala Coast) – Sunny and dry, home to some of the best beaches, resorts, and snorkeling spots.
East Side (Hilo & Puna) – Lush and rainy, with waterfalls, botanical gardens, and easy access to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
The Saddle Road – This highway cuts across the island and provides access to Mauna Kea and inland adventures.
The South & North Regions – South Point, the southernmost tip of the U.S., and the rolling green landscapes of Waimea are worth exploring.
“Give yourself extra time to explore. The Big Island isn’t just a destination — it’s an experience that unfolds at its own pace.”
Car Rentals: Essential for exploration
Public transportation is limited, and rideshares can be scarce outside of major towns. Renting a car is the best way to see the island.
4WD or not? – If you plan to visit places like Green Sand Beach or Mauna Kea’s summit, a 4WD vehicle is required.
Book early – Car rentals can be expensive and sell out fast, especially during peak seasons. However, check back on car rentals before you arrive, as sometimes prices drop nearer to your date of travel. We’ve saved hundreds of dollars by rebooking our rental last minute.
Gas up when you can – Some areas of the island have long stretches without gas stations, particularly on Saddle Road, on the southeastern portion of the island, and near Volcanoes National Park.
For affordable rental options, check Hawai‘i Car Rentals or Discount Hawaii Car Rental. We prefer Costco for our car rentals and we choose Budget overall because if you sign up for the free “Fastbreak” program, you’ll be able to skip the rental counter line, which can be 45 minutes or longer.
Respecting the land & culture
The Big Island is home to rich cultural heritage and delicate ecosystems. Be a respectful traveler by:
Staying on marked trails – Avoid damaging fragile ecosystems and cultural sites.
Not disturbing wildlife – Keep a safe distance from honu (sea turtles) and monk seals.
Learning local etiquette – A friendly aloha goes a long way, and removing shoes before entering someone’s home is customary.
Using reef-safe sunscreen – Protect coral reefs by choosing mineral-based sunscreen.
