Best free things to do on the Big Island: Unforgettable experiences without spending a dime
The Big Island of Hawaii is a dream destination filled with natural beauty, rich history, and cultural significance. While many attractions come with a price tag, there are plenty of amazing things to do for free.
From stargazing at world-renowned observatories to exploring ancient petroglyphs, here are some of the best cost-free activities to enjoy on the Big Island.
But first, a note on how we’ll help you make the most of your trip and dollars:
We’ve stocked the condo to help you save money
Our guests save money because they don’t have to rent gear. We offer a well-stocked “toy closet” to help you enjoy your activities: snorkel gear, coolers, boogey boards, beach mats and chairs, a wagon, beach umbrellas, toys and floatation devices, and more. You’ll even find “blue ice” cold packs in the freezer for your use.
We also stock our kitchen fully, with spices, oil, foil, parchment, tea, coffee, sugar, and many more cooking essentials. You’ll find all paper products, soap, shampoo, conditioner, dish detergent, sponges, and more supplies available so that you can minimize the money you spend. In-unit laundry, stocked with laundry detergent and dryer sheets, will save money on checked baggage.
Stargazing at Mauna Kea
Mauna Kea is one of the best places in the world for stargazing by night or taking in the impressive vistas by day. The Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station, located at 9,200 feet, offers spectacular night sky views, and on clear evenings, you can see planets, galaxies, and countless stars.

Check out ancient petroglyph fields
The Big Island is home to numerous petroglyph sites, where you can see ancient rock carvings created by Native Hawaiians centuries ago.
